Baguazhang (Chinese: 八卦掌, Pīnyīn: bāguà zhăng), or shorter just bagua, is the third and youngest of the so-called "internal martial arts". In bagua the finely-honed body control and the spiral-like movement of the whole body give the combatant advantage over the opponent and make it possible to surprise them when they least expect it. In China bagua, as well as baji, has long been the martial art favored by bodyguards. Bagua uses continuous movement and dynamic footwork, attacking from unexpected angles and moving the body. This makes it possible to attack and defend in unexpected situations. As the name “bāguà zhăng” (palm of the eight trigrams) implies, many of techniques are palm strikes, as well as takedowns.
